ISRO is preparing to launch EOS-05, also known as GISAT-1A, on September 4, 2026, from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The 2,367 kg Earth observation satellite will ride aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, nearly five years after a similar mission, GISAT-1, was lost mid-flight in 2021.
Carrying EOS-05 into space is GSLV-F17, the 19th flight under ISRO's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle programme. Standing 51.7 metres tall with a lift-off mass of 420.5 tonnes, it ranks among India's heavier launch vehicle configurations. The rocket relies on a cryogenic upper stage, a critical component for high-energy missions that need extra thrust to reach demanding orbits like this one. GSLV-F17 also features a four-metre Ogive payload fairing to protect the satellite during its ascent from Sriharikota.
Beyond the technical specifications, this launch carries the weight of unfinished business. In 2021, ISRO's GISAT-1 mission failed after a cryogenic stage problem on GSLV-F10, denying India the real-time imaging capability it had been counting on. EOS-05 is that mission's successor, built to finally deliver on the original vision. A successful launch would validate the GSLV system's reliability and mark a major step forward in India's push toward uninterrupted Earth observation from geosynchronous orbit.
