California-based space technology startup Reflect Orbital has signed a launch contract with Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace. Reflect Orbital plans to deploy large orbital mirrors to redirect natural sunlight to designated spots on Earth after sunset.
The partnership marks a major commercial milestone for India’s private space sector, securing launch payloads for Skyroot’s indigenous Vikram rocket series.
Under the commercial agreement, Skyroot Aerospace will provide two dedicated satellite launches to orbit Reflect Orbital’s reflective mirror payloads.
Skyroot Aerospace CEO Pawan Chandana celebrated the deal, describing it as an innovative application of commercial space capabilities. Reflect Orbital co-founder and CEO Ben Nowack emphasized that partnering with Skyroot ensures reliable, affordable access to orbit alongside US-based launch services.
Reflect Orbital plans to build a constellation of satellites carrying massive, highly reflective mirrors. These mirrors will reflect beams of solar light down to Earth during nighttime hours, offering custom illumination across target zones approximately five kilometers wide.
In July 2026, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Reflect Orbital’s application to construct and launch a demonstration satellite.
Reflect Orbital’s project builds on earlier attempts to harness space-based light reflection. In 1993, Russian engineers successfully deployed a 65-foot orbital mirror during the Znamya 2 experiment, casting a 5-kilometer-wide beam of sunlight across Europe. However, funding shortfalls and technical complications led researchers to shelve the project.
Despite enthusiasm, environmental groups and astronomers have raised sharp concerns regarding artificial illumination at night.
Reflect Orbital stated it will continue working with local communities, astronomers, and international regulatory bodies to mitigate ecological impacts as testing progresses.
