Important Day
World Humanitarian Day 19th August: Theme, History and Importance
Updated: 18 Aug 2026
2 Min Read

World Humanitarian Day is observed globally on August 19 to honour humanitarian and health workers who risk their own safety, and often their lives, to serve communities affected by conflict and crises. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses this day to pay tribute to colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty, while also recognising those who continue to provide care in some of the world's most dangerous environments.
World Humanitarian Day falls on August 19 every year. This year's global campaign, led by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), is themed "Families of Fallen Humanitarians," focusing on the personal stories of aid workers as shared through the voices of their families, loved ones, and the communities they served.
Despite these resolutions, attacks on health care remain widespread. Since December 2017, when WHO's Surveillance System for Attacks on Health Care was launched, more than 10,400 attacks have been documented across 29 countries and territories, resulting in over 5,700 deaths and 8,500 injuries.
So far this year alone, WHO has recorded 914 attacks on health care, causing 911 deaths and 1,486 injuries, with most incidents reported in Ukraine, Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territory, and Myanmar.
On this occasion, WHO renews its call for all parties in conflict to respect and protect health workers, patients, health facilities, and medical transport, in line with international humanitarian law. Protecting health care, WHO stresses, means protecting lives and preserving the resilience of health systems when they're needed most
