The Indian Army contingent has departed for Thailand to take part in the 15th edition of the India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-XV (2026) on 17th August, 2026. This exercise continues a longstanding tradition of military cooperation between the two countries, aimed at strengthening joint operational capabilities.
Exercise MAITREE-XV will be conducted from August 18 to 31, 2026, at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand. Interestingly, the last edition of this exercise was held on Indian soil, at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, back in September 2025, showing how the venue alternates between the two nations.
Both sides are fielding contingents of 85 personnel each. The Indian Army contingent is represented mainly by troops from 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Royal Thai Army contingent comes from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division.
Instituted in 2006, Exercise MAITREE aims to foster military cooperation between India and Thailand. Specifically, this edition focuses on enhancing combined capabilities for Joint Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorist Operations in jungle and semi-urban environments, carried out under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. Beyond the tactical training, the exercise also serves as a platform for the two armies to exchange operational experience, share best practices, and build mutual understanding, reinforcing the broader bilateral relationship between India and Thailand.
