INS Tabar Conducts Maritime Partnership Exercise with Russian Navy Military exercise 3 min read

The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar, commanded by Captain MR Harish with a crew of 280 officers and sailors, conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with the Russian Navy Ship Soobrazitelny on 30 July 2024. 

The INS Tabar was leaving the St. Petersburg port in Russia after participating in the 328th Russian Navy Day Parade celebrations.

It was the second time that INS Tabar was participating in the Russian Navy Day Parade. It participated in the 325th Russian Navy Day Parade held in 2021.

  • INS Tabar visited Russia from 25 -30 July 2024 to participate in the Russian Navy Day Parade celebrations.
  •  India has close ties with Russia, and Prime Minister Modi was in Russia from 8-10 July 2024 for a bilateral summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • The visit to INS Tabar highlights the deep and long-standing Naval cooperation between India and Russia.
  • During the Russian Naval Day Parade, which was conducted on the Neva River in St. Petersburg, the Russian President greeted the Indian sailors onboard INS Tabar.
  • INS Tabar was among the three foreign ships that participated in the parade. The other foreign ships were the Algerian Navy's training ship Soummam and the Chinese guided-missile destroyer Jiaozuo.
  • During its visit to St. Petersburg, INS Tabar participated in various professional interactions with the Russian Navy to enhance interoperability between the two forces. Both Navies conducted joint exercises and exchange programs to foster mutual understanding and cooperation. 

About INS Tabar 

  • INS Tabar of the Indian Navy is a Talwar Class multi-role stealth frigate. It was constructed at St. Petersburg's Baltic Shipyard in Russia and was commissioned in the Indian Navy in 2004. 
  • The ship, which has a maximum speed of  30 knots, is capable of engaging enemy surface vessels, submarines, and aerial targets.
  • INS Tabar is part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet, which is based in Mumbai and under Western Naval Command.
