Bharatiya Janata Party secured majority in West Bengal and Assam
Updated: 07 May 2026

History was created in the Assembly elections of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu on 4 May, 2026. On one hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a massive mandate in West Bengal and is preparing to form the government in the state for the first time.
On the other hand, in Tamil Nadu, 'Tamilaga Vettri Kadagam' (TVK), contesting elections for the first time, emerged as the largest party.
Talking about other Assembly elections, Assam and Puducherry have re-elected their incumbent governments, while in Kerala, the Congress-led UDF has come to power.
BJP has secured more than a two-thirds majority in the Assembly by winning 207 seats, ending the 15-year rule of TMC. TMC lagged far behind; in this first election held after a special intensive revision of the voter list in the state, it managed to win only 80 seats and was leading in one seat.
Out of 293 Assembly seats, results of 292 seats have been declared. Congress and 'Aam Janata Unnayan Party' won two seats each, while CPI(M) got one seat. For the first time since 1972, it appears that West Bengal will now be ruled by a party that is also in power at the Centre.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself lost her Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by more than 15 thousand votes.
Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, 'Tamilaga Vettri Kadagam' (TVK), created history. The party won 108 seats in its very first election after its formation, emerging as the largest party.
In the 234-member Assembly, the party is still 10 seats short of the majority mark required to form the government. The results have led to a 'hung Assembly' situation in the state.
TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay won both Perambur and Tiruchi East seats. The ruling DMK won 59 seats, while its main rival 'All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kadagam' (AIADMK) secured 47 seats.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin lost the election from Chennai’s Kolathur constituency to TVK candidate V.S. Babu. Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, who recently joined DMK, won from the Bodinayakanur constituency.
Among other parties, PMK won 4 seats and Congress secured 5 seats. BJP, DMDK and AMMK won one seat each. CPI(M), VCK and 'Indian Union Muslim League' won two seats each.
The BJP-led ruling alliance NDA has achieved a historic victory for the third consecutive time. In the 126-member Assembly, the alliance crossed the majority mark of 64 seats.
BJP won 82 seats, while its ally 'Asom Gana Parishad' (AGP) secured 9 seats and 'Bodoland People’s Front' won 10 seats.
On the other hand, Congress won 19 seats; 'All India United Democratic Front' and 'Raijor Dal' won two seats each, while TMC secured one seat.
The Congress-led alliance UDF secured a decisive victory. Congress won 63 seats, while its ally IUML won 22 seats, giving the alliance a strong lead across the state.
Almost all major leaders of UDF were elected with clear majorities across the state. Among the ruling LDF, CPI(M) got 26 seats, CPI got 8 and RJD got one seat. BJP, which had no representation in the Assembly earlier, won three seats this time. Party state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar secured a strong victory from Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has regained power and secured a comfortable majority of 18 seats in the 30-member house.
Among its constituent parties, All India NR Congress won 12 seats, BJP won 4 seats, while allies ADMK and LJK secured one seat each. Congress managed to win only one seat, while independent candidates won three seats.
