The United Kingdom (UK)-based Times Higher Education (THE) released the 14th Asia University Rankings 2026. In this ranking, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, located in Karnataka, emerged as the top university in India.
It was the only Indian institution to be included in the top 50, securing the 43rd position in Asia with a total score of 65.1; this is a decline from its 38th position in 2025.
China’s Tsinghua University secured the first position for the eighth consecutive year with a score of 93.6.
It was followed by Peking University (China) in second place with a score of 93.1 and the National University of Singapore in third place with a score of 91.1.
Malaysia entered the top 40 for the first time; Universiti Teknologi Petronas climbed eight places to reach a joint 35th position.
India ranked first with 128 universities, followed by Japan (115) and Turkey (109).
BITS Pilani has joined the list of institutions that have decided to opt out of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2026 evaluated 929 universities from 36 countries and regions, which is more than last year’s 853 institutions.
