World Tsunami Awareness Day 2026: Date, Theme & Objectives

The world observes World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) every year on November 5. The international observance promotes global tsunami preparedness, strengthens early warning networks, and drives disaster risk reduction across vulnerable coastal communities.
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) coordinates the global campaign alongside national governments, oceanographers, and emergency management agencies. For 2026, the official theme is “Be Tsunami Ready: Resilience starts with you.”
The United Nations General Assembly officially established World Tsunami Awareness Day in December 2015 through Resolution A/RES/70/203. The resolution adopted a proposal spearheaded by Japan.
Japan suggested November 5 to honor the historic “Inamura-no-hi” (burning of rice sheaves) story from November 5, 1854. During an earthquake in Wakayama Prefecture, local leader Gobuhei Hamaguchi noticed the sea receding. He set fire to his harvested rice sheaves atop a hill. The flames guided his fellow villagers to safety on high ground, saving the community from a devastating tsunami.
WTAD aligns directly with major global policy frameworks governing sustainable development and disaster management:
