Questions regarding days and their themes are asked in various exams. At the global level, the United Nations and its various agencies designate a year, specific days, and weeks as the occasion to mark particular events or topics to promote, through awareness and action, the objectives of the United Nations and its various organisation.

The Government of India or its Ministries also designate a year, specific days, and weeks with a particular theme.

2025 as a Year 

United Nations has designated 2025 Year as follows;

International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

  • 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the development of the methods of quantum mechanics that have led to its prominence in both science and technology today, 

International Year of Peace and Trust

  • Before 2025, the  United Nations observed 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.

International Year of Glaciers

  • The United Nations has also decided to observe the 21st March of every year as the World Day for Glaciers.
  • The first World Day for Glaciers will be observed on 21st March 2025.

International Years of Cooperatives 

  • Theme -  "Cooperatives Build a Better World." 
  • The International Day of Cooperatives year-long celebration was started in India.
  • It was started by Prime  Minister Narendra Modi at the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024 on 25 November 2024 in New Delhi.

Union Ministry of Defence 

  • The Union Ministry of Defence has decided to celebrate 2025 as the “Year of Reform”

Important Month in January 2025

National Road Safety Month

  • From 1st to 31st January 2025
  • Organised by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • Theme- Sadak Suraksha- Jeevan Raksha 

Important Weeks in January 2025

Oil Conservation Week (4th-10th January)

  • Started in 1991
  • Organised by - Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) in association with the Oil Industries and supported by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Road Safety Week (10-16th January)

  • Started in 1989 by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • It is observed to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving and reducing traffic-related fatalities.
  • Theme- Be a Road Safety Hero

Pin Code Week (15-21 January)

  • PIN (Postal Index Number) is a six-digit code of post office numbering used by India Post. 
  • The present PIN Code was introduced on 15 August 1972.
  • There are nine PIN regions in the country. The first eight are geographical regions, and the digit nine is reserved for the Army Postal Service.

4thJanuary 

World Braille Day 

  • In November 2018 the United Nations declared 4th January as World Braille Day.
  • First - 4th January 2019

Theme of 2025

  • Celebrating Accessibility and Inclusion for the Visually Impaired.

Braille is a tactile reading and writing system designed for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

It was developed by Louis Braille of France when he was just 15 years old. 

9th January 

Pravasi Bahartiya Diwas

  • Observed since 2003 to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa on 9th January 1915 onboard the ship S.S.Arabia in Mumbai (then Bombay).
  • The Ministry of External Affairs organises  Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention on the occasion of Prawasi Diwas.
  • The 18th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention was held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from 9-10 January 2025.
  • Theme of the 18th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas Convention - "Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”.

10th January  

World Hindi Diwas

  • Since 2006 every year.
  • It marks the first speech given in Hindi at the United Nations General Assembly on 10th January 1949.

12th January

National Youth Day 

Every year since 1985.

It marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand.

Theme of 2025- Celebrating the Power of Youth.

14th January

Armed Forces Veteran Day

  • Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is celebrated on 14th January every year to recognise the service rendered by the First Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Field Marshal KM Cariappa, who retired on this day in 1953. 
  • The day was first celebrated in 2016 and it has been commemorated every year since by hosting interactive events in honor of the Ex-Servicemen.

15th January 

Army Day 

  • Every year on 15th January since 1949.
  • On this day in 1949, Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa became the first Indian to take over as the Chief of the Army Staff. 
  • He took over from Sir Francis Robert Roy Butcher.
  • 77th Army Day  2025 was held in Pune, Maharashtra.
  • Theme: Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena

23rd January 

Prakram Diwas 

  • Observed every year since 2021. 
  • It marks the birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
  • The 2025 Prakram Diwas was celebrated at Barabati Fort in Cuttack, Odisha from 23-25th January 2025.

24th January 

International Day of Education 

  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2018 to observe 24th January as International Day of Education.
  • First - 24 January 2019
  • The theme of 2025- AI and education: Preserving human agency in a world of automation.

National Girls Child Day 

  • Celebrated every year since 2018 by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.
  • Theme of 2025- Empowering Girls for a Bright Future.

25th January  

India Tourism Day

  • Every year on 25th January.
  • The theme of the 2025- Tourism for Inclusive Growth.

National Voters Day 

  • Since 2011, National Voters Day in India has been observed on the 25th of January every year.
  • It was on this day in 1950 that the Election Commission of India came into existence.
  • Theme of 15th National Voters Day 2025- Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure.

26th January 

Republic Day

  • Every year since 1950, Republic Day has been observed in India on 26th January.
  • On 26th January 1950, the constitution was promulgated in the country. 
  • It is also called as the date of commencement of the constitution
  • Chief Guest 2025 Republic Day - President of Indonesia -Prabowo Subianto.

International Customs Day

  • It was established by the World Customs Organisation. 
  • First- 26 January 2009.
  • Theme of the 2025 International Customs Day- Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity.

International Day of Clean Energy 

  • The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution in August 2023 to designate 26th January as the International Day of Clean Energy. 
  • First- 26 January 2024.
  • The main aim of the day is to raise awareness and mobilize action for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.
  • The International Renewable Energy Agency was founded on 26th January 2009
  • .It is an inter-governmental organisation that helps countries transition from fossil fuels to green and renewable energy.
  • Theme - Clean Energy for People and Planet.

27th January

  • International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust 
  • The United Nations designated 27th January as the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
  • First -2013
  • This day is observed in memory of the more than 60 lakh Jews and other minorities who were killed by the Nazi regime in Germany's special concentration camps during the second world war.

28th January 

Data Protection Days 

  • On this day in 1981, the Convention 108 was signed in Europe.
  •  This treaty was the first legally binding international treaty dealing with privacy and data protection.
  • The day highlights the significance of privacy and data protection.

30th January   

Martyr's Day

  • The day commemorates the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • He was shot dead on 30th January 1948 at Birla House, New Delhi by Nathuram Godse.
  • Nathuram Ram Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha.

World Leprosy Eradication Day 

  • In India, World Leprosy Eradication Day is observed on 30th January every year as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s campaign for the eradication of leprosy.
  • In the World, the last Sunday of January month is observed as Leprosy eradication day.
  • Leprosy is also called Hansen's disease.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) has included Leprosy as one of the neglected tropical diseases (NTD) in the world.

National Cleanliness Day 

  • It was started on 30 January 2014 by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
  • It was started to promote cleanliness and sanitation as a way of life
  • 30th January was chosen as it was the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and he was a great supporter of cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Theme: Sustainable Cleanliness: Every Action Counts.

World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day

  • The World Health Assembly of the World Health Organisation (WHO) passed a resolution on 31 May 2021 to observe 30th January as the World Neglected Tropical Diseases. 
  • The first World Neglected Tropical Disease Day was observed on 30th January 2022.
  • The day seeks to raise the awareness of global leaders and the public about the neglected tropical disease which threatens an estimated 1.5 billion people mainly in poor developing countries.
