Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates three days 'Civil 20' India 2023 Summit in Jaipur, Rajasthan on July 29, 2023 under India’s G20 Presidency. The summit was held over three days from July 29-31, 2023. Spiritual leader Mata, Amritanandamayi Devi (Amma) has been appointed the Chair of the country’s Civil 20 (C20).
The C20 event will present the policy recommendations developed by its 16 Working Groups after extensive discussions with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and policymakers worldwide over the past over eight months.
The C20, launched in 2013 as an official G20 Engagement Group, provides a platform for the CSOs to bring forth non-governmental perspectives on the issues being taken up by the official G20. It gives them a forum to reflect on the primary & common concerns affecting the world and promote social & economic development.
The Group of Twenty (G20) was founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a forum for the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors to discuss global economic and financial issues.
The G20 comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom and United States) and the European Union.
The G20 members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.
The G20 Summit is held annually, under the leadership of a rotating Presidency.
India holds the Presidency of the G20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023. The theme of India’s G20 Presidency ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, which broadly translates to ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
The Group does not have a permanent secretariat or headquarters. The Presidency is supported by the Troika – previous, current and incoming Presidency. During India’s Presidency, the troika will comprise Indonesia, India and Brazil, respectively.
