The application window for the UGC NET December 2026 exam is now live for candidates aiming to build a career in higher education and research. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has published the notification on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), with the online registration window opening on 8 October 2026. The NTA will conduct the computer-based test (CBT) over a six-day window from December 14 to December 19, 2026.
UGC NET scores are used to determine candidates' eligibility for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Assistant Professor positions, and PhD admission, depending on the category in which they qualify. Conducted in two cycles each year, the examination offers postgraduate candidates an opportunity to pursue academic and research-related career paths.
Before completing the application form, aspirants should familiarise themselves with the December session's deadlines, examination scheme, qualifying requirements, and registration guidelines. The following sections cover the key information candidates need to know about UGC NET December 2026.
The UGC-NET is intended to evaluate the eligibility of Indian nationals for various academic and research roles, including the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D. programs. Only 6% of the candidates will pass the Assistant Professor Exam. The UGC-NET December 2026 session will be held in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode at designated centers across Indian universities and colleges.
If you're aiming for a career in teaching or research, the UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is the way to fulfil your dreams:
Those who secure a place in these institutions become eligible for a monthly fellowship from UGC, which helps cover tuition fees, research expenses, and living costs, allowing them to focus fully on their studies. The JRF award remains valid for three years from the date mentioned on the award letter. For candidates already enrolled in a Ph.D. program, the fellowship begins either from the date the NET results are declared or the date they join the program, whichever is later.
UGC NET 2026 Notification is out with all the required details that candidates must know before filling out the UGC NET Application Form 2026. Aspirants are strongly encouraged to thoroughly go through the UGC NET December Notification 2026 to understand key details such as the exam pattern, eligibility criteria, syllabus, important dates and other essential information. It’s important to note that selection for the exam is provisional and contingent upon the candidate meeting all the specified eligibility criteria.
Eligibility for the UGC-NET is determined based on a candidate’s overall performance in both papers of the exam. However, candidates who qualify only for ‘Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’ or ‘admission to Ph.D. only’ will not be considered eligible for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Applicants are strongly advised to carefully select their preferences and options while filling out the UGC-NET Application Form to ensure their choices are accurate and aligned with their academic and career goals.
