India plans to strengthen its space launch capabilities by making four launch pads functional by 2029, according to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman V. Narayanan. The expansion aims to increase India's satellite launch capacity and meet rising domestic and global demand for space services.
The announcement highlights India's growing ambitions in space exploration, commercial satellite launches and human spaceflight.
ISRO plans to develop a dedicated 2,000-acre Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) complex at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district. The agency also plans to establish a third launch pad at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
The upcoming Kulasekarapattinam spaceport will include integration buildings, launch pads, rail-track systems, and telemetry, tracking and command infrastructure. These facilities will support launch operations and help India respond to the growing demand for small satellite launches.
The proposed expansion will strengthen India's space infrastructure and create opportunities for greater participation by private companies in the space sector.
ISRO is also advancing the Gaganyaan mission, India's human spaceflight programme. Chairman V. Narayanan stated that the agency planned to conduct the first uncrewed test within the next two months, followed by two additional uncrewed tests before the crewed mission.
These preliminary missions will assess critical systems, including environmental control, crew safety, escape mechanisms and the crew module's interior conditions. Engineers will evaluate performance under different pressure, temperature and humidity conditions.
According to the announcement, ISRO had conducted approximately 8,000 ground-based experiments for Gaganyaan. Four astronaut-designates were undergoing specialised training at the time of the announcement.
These tests will help ISRO assess system reliability and astronaut safety before attempting a crewed spaceflight.
ISRO is preparing for Chandrayaan-5, a collaborative lunar mission with Japan's space agency. According to the announcement, the mission will feature a 350-kilogram rover designed to conduct surface experiments for 100 days.
The planned collaboration highlights the importance of international partnerships in space science. It also reflects India's continued interest in lunar exploration and advanced robotic missions.
V. Narayanan clarified that ISRO would not be privatised. However, he emphasised that partnerships with private companies were essential to meet the rising demand for thousands of satellites.
Private-sector participation can help expand manufacturing capacity, support innovation and strengthen India's commercial space ecosystem. ISRO's continued role alongside private enterprises reflects a collaborative approach to developing national space capabilities.
India's planned expansion of launch infrastructure reflects its ambition to become a stronger participant in the global space economy. New launch facilities, Gaganyaan preparations and Chandrayaan-5 cooperation could strengthen the country's launch capacity, scientific capabilities and international partnerships.
