India Records 4,077 Ayush Patent Filings by 2026

India recorded 4,077 patent applications and secured 711 granted patents in the Ayush sector between FY 2014–15 and FY 2025–26. The government officially released these numbers in the Status Report on Ayush Related Inventions in India (2014–2026) during the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations.

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (CGPDTM) under Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry published the flagship report to track intellectual property growth across traditional medicine.

Ayush Patent Filings Surge by 836.5%

Annual patent filings experienced massive growth over the past decade. Applications soared from just 63 in FY 2014–15 to 590 in FY 2025–26, representing an 836.5% increase.

Filings hit an initial peak of 606 in FY 2022–23 before normalizing to 299 in FY 2023–24. The sector bounced back sharply to reach 590 applications in FY 2025–26.

Concurrently, annual patent grants jumped from 3 in FY 2015–16 to a record high of 204 in FY 2023–24.

Post-COVID Wave Drives 70% of Total Filings

The post-COVID-19 period triggered an unprecedented wave of research and product development in traditional healthcare.

• FY 2020–21 to FY 2025–26: Applicants filed 2,854 applications, accounting for 70% of all filings over the 12-year window.
• FY 2014–15 to FY 2019–20: Applicants submitted 1,223 applications.
• Grants Share: The post-COVID era secured 657 patent grants, representing 92.4% of the total patents issued.

Individuals and Academic Institutions Lead Innovation

Individual inventors and universities form the backbone of Ayush research in India, contributing 76.3% of all patent filings.

Government Commitment to Protecting Traditional Knowledge

Union Minister of State (IC) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav emphasized that the government is building a modern environment where ancient wisdom meets contemporary scientific validation.

Ministry of Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha added that the surge in university research and startup participation confirms the commercial viability of Ayush-based innovations globally.
