The ‘International Day for the Eradication of Poverty’ is observed globally every year on October 17. The annual observance links poverty eradication directly to human rights, human dignity, and global peace. The observance of this day began on October 17, 1987.
The purpose of this day is to foster understanding and dialogue between people living in poverty and the broader society. On this day, awareness about poverty is raised in various countries, and numerous initiatives are launched for the development of those living in poverty.
The 2026 event kicks off a three-year multi-year campaign theme: “United for Peace and Human Rights” (2026–2028). Within this framework, the specific focus for 2026 targets “Safe Homes for All,” highlighting adequate housing as a foundation for economic security, social inclusion, and personal dignity.
Over 2.8 billion people worldwide currently face housing inadequacy. Families living in extreme poverty endure the heaviest burden. Substandard, unsafe, or unaffordable housing deprives vulnerable communities of basic human rights and locks them into generational poverty.
Inadequate housing blocks access to clean water, healthcare, quality education, and employment. Without secure shelter, individuals face systemic social exclusion and increased security risks.
"Housing insecurity extends beyond the lack of physical shelter. Unsafe, overcrowded homes deepen poverty, destroy health, and deny people their fundamental human rights."
The 2026 observance urges governments and global leaders to act across three critical action areas:
The 2026 theme reinforces the Doha Political Declaration (A/RES/80/5), adopted by the UN General Assembly following the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025. The declaration mandates global access to safe housing, clean drinking water, and adequate sanitation.
