Recently, the DRDO and the Indian Air Force successfully conducted a flight test of the indigenous RudraM-II air-to-surface missile from an aerial platform—specifically, the IAF's Su-30MKI fighter jet.
The missile was tested under extremely challenging conditions and successfully met all mission objectives.
The test was supported by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, a key DRDO facility for testing missiles, rockets, and other defense systems.
RudraM-II has been developed indigenously by the DRDO. The Hyderabad-based Research Centre Imarat (RCI) served as the nodal laboratory, with contributions from several other DRDO establishments.
Significance: This successful test strengthens the IAF's precision strike capabilities, enhances SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) operations, promotes 'Atmanirbharata' (self-reliance) in the defense sector, and demonstrates the growing maturity of India's advanced weapon technologies.
RudraM is a series of indigenous air-to-surface anti-radiation missiles. It was developed to meet the Indian Air Force's requirement for enhanced 'Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses' (SEAD) capabilities.
Anti-radiation missiles are designed to target enemy radars, communication systems, and other radio-frequency sources that form part of hostile air-defense networks.
Three variants of the RudraM missile—RudraM-I, RudraM-II, and RudraM-III—have been developed. Extensive testing of the first two variants has already been completed.
In SEAD operations, such missiles are utilized primarily during the initial stages of aerial conflict. Their objective is to strike enemy air-defense assets from stand-off ranges, thereby increasing the survivability of friendly aircraft in subsequent missions.
The ‘New Generation Anti-Radiation Missile’ (NGARM) is an indigenously developed weapon system by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This system is also known as ‘RudraM-1’.
It was tested from the ‘Integrated Test Range’ (ITR) at Balasore, located on India's east coast.
India’s first indigenous ‘anti-radiation missile’—RudraM—developed for the Indian Air Force, underwent a successful flight test from a ‘Sukhoi-30 MKI’ jet.
This marks yet another test of indigenously developed weapon systems, following recent trials of the ‘Shaurya missile’ and the ‘Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle’ (HSTDV).
