India to Host ICAR-CGIAR Science Week in Delhi in 2027

New Delhi will host the ICAR-CGIAR Science and Partnership Week from April 12 to 17, 2027. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) jointly announced this major global event. Over 5,000 delegates—including researchers, farmers, policymakers, tech startups, and business leaders from around the world—will gather in India's capital to exchange smart farming innovations and build practical solutions to feed a growing planet.

Why India Is the Ideal Host

India brings decades of agricultural achievement to the international stage. ICAR operates one of the largest national agricultural research systems in the world and has partnered directly with CGIAR for more than 50 years. Ten CGIAR research centers currently operate across India, focusing on crops, water resources, livestock, fisheries, human nutrition, and agricultural policy.

India actively shares its farming breakthroughs with developing nations across the globe. A groundnut sample that ICRISAT conserved in India now helps farmers cultivate stronger harvests in Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique, and Zambia. Furthermore, the Center of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Hyderabad spreads tested Indian farming techniques across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

What Global Agricultural Leaders Say

Dr. M. L. Jat (Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR) emphasized how 50 years of international teamwork helped transform India from a food-deficit country into a major global food exporter. He highlighted that the 2027 conference will expand South-South cooperation, allowing India to share its advancements in:

• Climate-resilient farming techniques
• Digital agricultural tools and AgriStack technology
• Modern farm machinery and millet production
• Natural farming and soil health restoration

He added that panels will tackle key issues like water conservation, public-private partnerships, youth and women empowerment in agriculture, and clear science communication.

Dr. Ismahane Elouafi (Executive Managing Director, CGIAR) praised India's agricultural achievements, noting that Indian seeds and scientific knowledge already boost farm yields across Asia and Africa. She explained that the New Delhi event will build upon the first CGIAR Science Week held in Nairobi, Kenya, in April 2025 to map out the next 50 years of global agricultural cooperation.

Dr. Himanshu Pathak (Director General, ICRISAT) noted that India's rise from food shortages to massive food exports highlights the power of science and global teamwork. He expressed enthusiasm for showcasing India's successes while adopting global innovations to build sustainable food networks.

Turning Science into Real-World Impact

The inaugural 2025 event in Nairobi launched CGIAR's primary research portfolio. The upcoming 2027 event in New Delhi will shift the focus to turning scientific discoveries into everyday tools for farmers. Participants will create actionable strategies to raise crop yields, safeguard natural resources, and support India's vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
