6th Assembly of International Solar Alliance Held in New Delhi

The Sixth Assembly of the International Solar Alliance is in New Delhi from October 30 to November 2, 2023. The assembly has been presided over by Shri R.K. Singh, the President of the ISA Assembly and Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Government of India.

• Delegates from 116 member and signatory countries of the ISA, as well as delegates from prospective countries, partner organizations, private sector, and other stakeholders, will participate in the assembly. India and France jointly launched the ISA after COP21 in Paris.
• The Sixth Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) will discuss initiatives that relate to energy access, energy security, and energy transitions, with a primary focus on three key areas:

1. Ensuring universal access to energy through the implementation of solar mini-grids.

2. Facilitating the mobilization of finance for the accelerated deployment of solar power.

3. Encouraging the diversification of supply chains and manufacturing processes for solar energy.

About International Solar Alliance

• The International Solar Alliance (ISA) was established as a joint effort by India and France to combat climate change by implementing solar energy solutions.
• It was conceptualized during the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Paris in 2015.
• The ISA Framework Agreement was amended in 2020, making all member states of the United Nations eligible to join. Currently, 116 countries have signed the ISA Framework Agreement and 94 have submitted the necessary instruments of ratification to become full members of the ISA.
• The ISA is a member-driven, action-oriented, and collaborative platform that aims to increase the deployment of solar energy technologies. Its goal is to provide energy access, ensure energy security, and promote energy transition in its member countries.
• The ISA strives to develop and implement cost-effective and transformative energy solutions powered by the sun.
• Its focus is on helping member countries develop low-carbon growth trajectories, with a particular emphasis on delivering impact in countries categorized as Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
• As a global platform, the ISA partners with multilateral development banks (MDBs), development financial institutions (DFIs), private and public sector organizations, civil society, and other international institutions.
• These partnerships are key to delivering the changes that the ISA seeks to see in the world going forward.
• The ISA's 'Towards 1000' strategy aims to mobilize USD 1,000 billion of investments in solar energy solutions by 2030.
• It also aims to provide energy access to 1,000 million people using clean energy solutions and to install 1,000 GW of solar energy capacity.
• This would help mitigate global solar emissions by 1,000 million tonnes of CO2 every year.
• 94 countries have signed and ratified the International Solar Alliance framework.
• ISA Headquarters: International Solar Alliance Secretariat, Surya Bhawan, National Institute of Solar Energy Campus Gwal Pahari, Faridabad-Gurugram Road, Gurugram.
