The historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand officially took effect on October 20, 2026, coinciding with the festival of Vijayadashami. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and New Zealand's Minister for Trade and Investment Todd McClay jointly announced the landmark rollout.
The agreement grants Indian exporters 100% duty-free access across all tariff lines in New Zealand. It eliminates peak import tariffs of up to 10%, empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), farmers, artisans, and manufacturers across the country.
Both nations launched official trade talks on March 16, 2025, and concluded the full text within nine months on December 22, 2025. They formally signed the historic deal on April 27, 2026.
The deal advances the India–New Zealand Strategic Partnership: Roadmap to 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade in goods and services to NZ$7 billion (approx. ₹35,000 crore) by 2030.
New Zealand's decision to scrap customs duties benefits high-volume Indian manufacturing and export sectors immediately.
Marking the rollout, Piyush Goyal flagged off the first-ever export consignment of an Indian-manufactured JCB machine bound for New Zealand, alongside agricultural, footwear, and leather shipments.
New Zealand extended its most comprehensive service commitments to date. The agreement offers Indian service providers market access across 118 sectors and Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) status in 139 sub-sectors.
The pact establishes an Agricultural Productivity Partnership to modernize Indian farming practices rather than expose domestic producers to sudden import shocks.
New Zealand will establish Centres of Excellence to transfer advanced cultivation technologies, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve yields for kiwifruit, apples, and honey.
To protect domestic farmers and rural livelihoods, India completely excluded sensitive agricultural commodities from tariff concessions, including:
Strict Rules of Origin and bilateral safeguard mechanisms will prevent third-party goods from abusing duty-free channels.
New Zealand committed to facilitating USD 20 billion in foreign direct investment into India. The capital inflow will target infrastructure projects, advanced manufacturing, agricultural supply chains, and technology startups.
Furthermore, New Zealand agreed to streamline the registration of Indian Geographical Indications (GIs), safeguarding traditional rural artisans and regional craft communities.
