SSC Steno Exam Pattern is released by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) through the official notification, and knowing the SSC Stenographer Syllabus & Exam Pattern will help you to plan your exam preparation well. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Stenographer Exam every year to recruit eligible candidates for Grade C and D posts in various government departments and ministries.

SSC Stenographer Selection Process

Before starting with the SSC Steno Syllabus and Exam Pattern, let us first know the Selection Process. The selection process for the SSC Stenographer Post consists of two tier:

  1. Tier I - Computer-Based Test (CBT): A Computer-Based Test (CBT) having objective-type MCQs checks candidates’ knowledge of General Intelligence, General Awareness, and English Language.
  2. Tier II - Skill Test in Stenography: Candidates who qualify in CBT are called for a skill test. In this test, candidates need to type dictated passages on a computer at a required speed and accuracy.

The final merit list is prepared based on the performance in the CBT, but qualifying the skill test is mandatory for final selection.

SSC Stenographer CBT Exam Pattern

The detailed SSC Stenographer Tier 1 Exam Pattern is mentioned in the official SSC Steno notification. Candidates should carefully review the structure and prepare their SSC Stenographer Preparation strategy according to the syllabus.

  • The SSC Steno tier I is a Computer-Based Test (CBT), conducted online and consists of 200 objective-type, multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
  • The duration of the exam is 120 minutes (2 hours).
  • The SSC Steno CBT consists of 3 subjects – General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language & Comprehension.
  • Questions (except those of English Language & Comprehension) are set in both English and Hindi.
  • For every wrong answer, there is a negative marking of 1/3 mark.

SSC Stenographer Skill Test Exam Pattern

The SSC stenographer tier II exam is Stenography Skill Test, in which candidates will receive a 10-minute dictation in either English or Hindi, depending on the option selected by them while filling out the online application. 

  • The dictation speed will be 100 words per minute for Stenographer Grade ‘C’ and 80 words per minute for Stenographer Grade ‘D’. 
  • After the dictation, candidates must transcribe the given passage on a computer within the prescribed time.

Note: Candidates opting for the Stenography Test in Hindi will have to learn English Stenography skills after their appointment, and those choosing English will need to learn Hindi Stenography.
