The Navies Of India And Bangladesh Engage In CORPAT And Ex-Bongosagar Defence 4 min read

The 4th edition of the bilateral exercise Bongosagar-23 between the Indian Navy and the Bangladesh Navy and the 5th edition of the Coordinated Patrol (Coordinated Patrol-Corporate) by the navies of both the countries was conducted in the North Bay of Bengal from 07 to 09 November 2023.

Carried out joint patrolling near International Maritime Boundary Line

  • The navies of both the countries conducted joint patrolling near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and subsequently conducted maritime exercises to enhance interoperability.
  • Indian Navy ships Kuthar, Kiltan and maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) Dornier participated in the exercise along with Bangladesh Navy ships Abu Bakr, Abu Ubaida and MPA.
  • The ships conducted communication drills, surface gun-shoots, tactical maneuvers and other exercises culminating with a steam past.
  • CORPAT-23 also saw the first Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise between the two navies, in which a search and rescue scenario at sea was practiced.
  • Routine bilateral exercises and coordinated patrols have enhanced mutual understanding and collaboration between the two naval forces.

INS Kuthar and INS Kiltan:

  • INS Kuthar is an indigenously built guided-missile corvette, while INS Kiltan is an indigenously built anti-submarine corvette.
  • Both ships are part of the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam, which operates under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.

India-Bangladesh relations:

  • Being the pioneer, India was the first to recognize Bangladesh as an independent state.
  • India established diplomatic relations with Bangladesh soon after its independence in December 1971.
  • India has civilizational, cultural, social and economic relations with Bangladesh.
  • It has strategic importance due to its geographical location as India's eastern neighbor.
  • Bangladesh provides India with access to the Bay of Bengal and a major route for trade and connectivity with South-East Asia. It also ensures convenient access to the north-eastern states of India.

Defense cooperation between India and Bangladesh:

  • Both the countries are 4096.7 km apart. share the border. This is the longest land border shared by India with any of its neighboring countries.
  • Assam, West Bengal, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya share borders with Bangladesh.
  • Joint exercises are also regularly conducted between the two countries- Army (Sampriti exercise) and Navy (Bongosagar exercise).
  • Bangladesh stands as India's most significant trading partner in the Indian subcontinent, with exports amounting to US$8 billion from April to November 2022.
  • India and Bangladesh are attempting to enhance regional cooperation through multilateral forums such as South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Bay of Bengal Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
