World Teachers' Day is observed on 5 October every year to honour teachers and the role they play in shaping society. In 2026, it falls on a Monday, 5 October, and marks 60 years of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers.
World Teachers' Day 2026 falls on Monday, 5 October 2026. The theme is "Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures". The year also marks 60 years since the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
The day will look at the progress made in recognising teachers. It will also draw attention to present challenges such as professional autonomy, working conditions, salaries, and workload. Policymakers and society are called upon to protect and raise the status of the teaching profession.
The date marks the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation. It was signed at a special intergovernmental conference held in Paris. The document sets global standards on:
UNESCO began observing the day in 1994 to highlight the role teachers play in shaping education and society. Today, it is marked in more than 100 countries.
World Teachers' Day commemorates a 1966 international treaty on teacher rights. Whereas India celebrates it as National Teachers’ Day on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a prominent philosopher and India's second president.

The main global event in 2026 will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. It is organised jointly by UNESCO, the ILO, UNICEF, and Education International, and will be opened by UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany.

Schools and communities will also hold programmes, thank their teachers, and ask for better support for educators.
