The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for optogenetics. This method uses light to control nerve cells, helping scientists understand how the brain shapes memories, feelings and behaviour. The prize amount is 12 million Swedish kronor, shared equally.
The prize was announced on 5 October 2026, the first day of the Nobel season. Announcements run until 12 October and cover six categories: Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace and Economic Sciences. The Medicine prize is given by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute.
Optogenetics is a method that uses light to switch nerve cells on and off. It lets researchers see how nerve cells shape memories, feelings, and behaviour inside a living brain.
Earlier brain research could show which areas were linked to which functions, but it could not prove cause and effect. Per Svenningsson, Chair of the Nobel Committee, said optogenetics now allows brain mapping that was once only a dream.
Researchers use it to find the neural circuits behind memories, feelings and behaviours linked to neurological and psychiatric disorders. In clinical medicine, it is being tried to restore sight in people with visual impairment.
