Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability ends in Delhi

The four-day Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability ended in New Delhi on July 7, 2024. The conclave provided a platform for the stakeholders, including industry leaders, innovators, policymakers, and environmental experts in the plastic industry, to learn about the latest trends and innovations in the recycling of plastic recycling and sustainable practices.

Secretary, Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Nivedita Shukla Verma, inaugurated the Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability on 4 July 2024.

Organiser of Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability 

The Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability was organised by the All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) in association with the Chemicals and Petrochemicals Manufacturers' Association (CPMA).

Aim of the Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability 

The main focus of the Global Conclave on Plastic Recycling and Sustainability was on the 

rising use of plastic, its impact on the environment, and the steps needed to implement solutions. The conclave also aimed to address the critical issues surrounding plastic use, its impact on the environment, and the innovative solutions that can lead to a more sustainable future.

Plastic Recycling in India 

The government of India has set a target to achieve a Zero Waste goal by 2070 to strengthen environmental sustainability in the country.

With the increasing consumption of plastic and the consequent generation of plastic waste, the emphasis is on the management of plastic waste to achieve the zero waste policy goal.

According to the AIPMA, only 30% of India’s 3.4 million tonnes (MT) of plastic waste is recycled. 

Due to infrastructure constraints, around 26,000 tons of plastic waste per day are not recycled in India.

According to the Plastic Industry, the  Indian plastic recycling industry is expected to reach $6.9 billion by 2033.

The unorganised sector, especially the rag pickers, plays a crucial role in plastic recycling in india.

The All India Plastics Manufacturers Association (AIPMA) was founded in 1945. It is one of the oldest and largest Apex bodies in India's plastic industry.

The headquarters of AIPMA is in Mumbai. 

The Chemicals & Petrochemicals Manufacturers’ Association( CPMA) was set up in 1993. CPMA is the apex body of the  Indian Chemicals & Petrochemicals Industry.
