ISRO Launches 'Mission MITRA' in Ladakh Under the Gaganyaan Mission
Updated: 06 Apr 2026
3 Min Read

Under India's Gaganyaan mission, a unique experiment, dubbed 'Mission MITRA', has been initiated amidst the extremely challenging conditions of Ladakh. This mission is being spearheaded by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
ISRO is conducting Mission MITRA in Leh, located in the Union Territory of Ladakh, from April 2 to April 9, 2026.
At an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters, Leh presents environmental conditions such as hypoxia, low temperatures, and isolation, which serve as a natural analog (model) for spaceflight operations.
Mission MITRA is a first-of-its-kind team behavior study, designed jointly by ISRO and the IAF-Institute of Aerospace Medicine to examine the physiological, psychological, and operational dynamics of crew and ground teams working in a high-altitude environment.
The primary objective of this initiative is to assess the physical endurance, teamwork, and mental resilience of the members participating in the mission. As India prepares for long-duration space missions, this program aims to ensure that astronauts are not only physically trained but also mentally fully prepared to face the challenges inherent in space travel.
This program is being conducted by ISRO's 'Human Space Flight Centre' (HSFC) in collaboration with various research teams and experts.
Under this mission, the four designated astronauts, Shubhanshu Shukla, Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, and Angad Pratap, will be tested for their physical, psychological, and operational dynamics under a set of behavioral tests.
Four selected astronauts are participating in this mission; having arrived in Leh, they have successfully completed the process of acclimatizing themselves to the local environment. The full name of Mission Mitra is 'Mapping of Interoperable Traits & Reliability Assessment.' It has been designed with the objective of creating (simulating) space-like conditions right here on Earth.
ISRO and the IAF's Institute of Aerospace Medicine have jointly designed this mission, while Protoplanet—a Bengaluru-based startup—is responsible for managing its facilities and ensuring compliance with necessary regulations.
Mission Mitra is currently underway in the high-altitude mountainous terrain of Ladakh. Ladakh is renowned for its harsh weather conditions, low oxygen levels, and isolation. These conditions closely mirror the challenges encountered in outer space.
Gaganyaan is a mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aimed at demonstrating human spaceflight capability by sending a manned mission into an orbit of 400 km for a duration of three days, and subsequently bringing the crew safely back to Earth.
This space mission was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address to the nation in 2018. If successful, India will become the fourth nation to send humans into space; the other three nations are the United States, Russia, and China.
ISRO plans to launch the first uncrewed Gaganyaan (G1) test flight towards the end of 2026. This flight will carry "Vyommitra"—a humanoid robot designed to resemble a woman. ISRO has signed a contract with a subsidiary of Roscosmos (the Russian space agency) known as Glavkosmos to train the Indian astronauts selected for this mission.
The space agencies of India and France have signed an agreement to collaborate on India's first human space mission, Gaganyaan. The GSLV Mk III—a three-stage heavy-lift launch vehicle—will be utilized to launch Gaganyaan.
