Karnataka to Set Up India's First Government-Driven AI University
Updated: 15 Jul 2026
2 Min Read

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the state will build India's first government-driven artificial intelligence university, alongside an AI hub for startups, researchers, and industry. He announced this while inaugurating Google I/O Connect India 2026 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bengaluru.
Karnataka Chief Minister Shivakumar said AI would be woven into education through AI-assisted teaching, healthcare via early diagnosis and better medical support, agriculture through AI-based advisory services, citizen services for faster government delivery, and small businesses through AI-powered tools. He called AI the defining technological shift of this generation.
The CM pointed to Karnataka's nearly 40% share of India's software exports, over 17,000 startups, and thousands of global capability centers as proof the state is ready to lead this push. Plans also include expanding digital infrastructure, including data centers, to support AI research and cloud computing.
Shivakumar asked Google to deepen its Karnataka partnership across five areas:Â
AI solutions for education, healthcare, and agriculture; support for AI startups; AI learning access for students; responsible AI research; and long-term investment in the state's tech ecosystem. He credited Google's Bengaluru presence for strengthening the city's global tech standing.
Shivakumar said Karnataka aims to become an "AI-native state," using AI to improve governance and daily public services rather than treating it as just a concept. The university and AI Hub are meant to bridge research, innovation, and industry needs while training skilled professionals, positioning Karnataka as a hub for responsible, inclusive AI growth.
