History of Kargil War Diwas

Fighting erupted in the summer of 1999 after Pakistani troops and infiltrators quietly crossed the Line of Control and dug into high-altitude posts across Kargil, Dras, and Batalik. Their goal was to choke off National Highway 1A, the lifeline linking Srinagar to Ladakh. India answered with Operation Vijay, drawing in the Army alongside the Air Force's Operation Safed Sagar and the Navy's Operation Talwar. More than two months of combat in punishing terrain followed before the infiltrators were pushed back and every post recovered.

Raksha Mantri flags off Shaurya Vijay Yatra 2026 for Kargil Diwas

1. A 13-day commemorative motorcycle expedition organised to mark Kargil Vijay Diwas 2026, carrying the theme "One Ride, One Nation, One Salute."
2. Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh flagged off the expedition on 14 July 2026, with senior defence officials present at the launch.
3. 28 participants, comprising serving and retired defence personnel along with their family members.
4. The convoy starts at the National War Memorial in New Delhi and ends at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, covering roughly 1,900 kilometers through the northern Himalayas.
5. Riders navigate high-altitude, difficult terrain over 13 days, stopping en route to pay respects at the Chandimandir War Memorial, Rezang La War Memorial, and Leh War Memorial. They also meet and felicitate Veer Naris along the way. The journey concludes at Dras on 26 July, coinciding with Kargil Vijay Diwas.
6. The expedition honors the soldiers who fought at nearly 20,000 feet in temperatures as low as minus 40°C to reclaim Kargil's peaks in 1999. It pays tribute to Param Vir Chakra awardees Vikram Batra, Manoj Kumar Pandey, Yogendra Singh Yadav, and Sanjay Kumar and aims to pass on their story of courage to younger generations.
7. The riders carry an urn of sacred soil from the National War Memorial to be offered at Kargil, symbolising the link between today's citizens and the sacrifice of 1999. Rajnath Singh described the gesture as uniting the nation's present reverence with its heroes' valour, bringing together people of different backgrounds under one shared salute.
