In Srinagar, Asia’s largest tulip garden has been opened to visitors. Located at the foothills of the Zabarwan Range and overlooking the Dal Lake, the garden is fully prepared to welcome of local, domestic, and international tourists.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Tulip Show 2026 and toured the garden.
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, located in the foothills of the Zabarwan mountains with a view of Dal Lake, has more than 1.8 million blooming tulips this year. Along with tulips, other spring flowers such as hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and ranunculus have also been planted.
Spread across 74 acres, the garden showcases around 70–75 varieties of tulips and many other flowers, several of which have been imported from the Netherlands. The blooming of tulips is traditionally considered the beginning of the spring tourism season in Kashmir.
The garden usually remains in full bloom for about three to four weeks, attracting nature lovers, photographers, and tourists from across India and abroad, adding vibrant colors to the valley’s spring landscape. The Chief Minister has invited tourists from across the country and the world to visit Jammu & Kashmir during the spring season and experience its unmatched natural beauty.
Last year, more than 855,125 visitors—local, domestic, and international—visited the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, setting a new record. It is expected that the Tulip Show 2026 will boost tourism in the Kashmir region, especially with the addition of several new and unique tourist destinations.
Tulips belong to the genus Tulipa of the lily family. They are spring-blooming, bulbous perennial plants known for their large, attractive, cup-shaped flowers.
Originally native to Central Asia and commonly associated with the Netherlands, tulips are available in almost every color—purple, red, yellow, and white. There are more than 3,000 varieties, including single, double, and parrot types.
Tulip cultivation first began in the Ottoman Empire. In the 1630s, the Dutch experienced “Tulip Mania,” a famous economic bubble in which tulip bulbs were sold at extremely high prices.
