Sethuraman Panchanathan has been named the recipient of the 2026 Arthur M. Bueche Award by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He will be honoured on 4 October 2026 at the NAE's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., a moment that also makes him the first Indian American and the first Arizonan to win this award in its 40-plus year history.
The Bueche Award isn't handed out for a single achievement; it honours people who've shaped the relationship between engineering, technology, and public policy in the US. Panchanathan's selection breaks new ground on two fronts, being both the first Indian American and the first person from Arizona to receive it.
Born on 24 June 1961 and raised in Chennai, Panchanathan's path to American science leadership started early: a childhood visit to see Apollo 11 moon rocks at Chennai's American Center sparked his fascination with science. He studied physics at the University of Madras, engineering at IISc and IIT Madras, and completed his PhD in Canada at the University of Ottawa. He went on to serve as the 15th Director of the US National Science Foundation from 2020 to 2025, after years leading research and innovation at Arizona State University.
His academic work centered on human-centered multimedia computing, machine learning, and haptic interfaces technology built to genuinely improve life for people with different abilities. He founded ASU's Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing, published close to 500 research papers, and mentored well over 150 students and researchers along the way.
Panchanathan's journey moved from the lab to national policy. In 2014, he became the first Indian-origin appointee to the US National Science Board. As NSF Director, he sat on major federal bodies, including the White House CHIPS council, and helped establish the NSF's Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships.
The honour reflects a career that has bridged research, academic leadership, and science policy. He was elected to the NAE in 2024, and in 2025, India recognised him with the Padma Shri for his work in science and engineering
