India Secures Five Gold Medals in the 56th International Physics Olympiad 2026

India delivered a landmark performance at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in 2026, held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from July 4 to 12. Five Indian students returned home with gold medals. This clean sweep placed India in joint first position on the overall medal tally, sharing the honor with Russia, China, Kazakhstan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The event drew 381 young physicists representing 87 countries, making it one of the largest editions of the Olympiad in recent years.
Each of the five students, Kanishk Jain from Pune, Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Rishit Garg from New Delhi, Shresth Suraiya from Mumbai, and Svarit Joshi from Ahmedabad, brought a distinct academic background to the competition. Their selection followed a rigorous multi-stage process involving national-level physics tests, orientation camps, and intensive problem-solving training designed to match international olympiad standards. Winning gold as a group, rather than a single standout performer, signals depth in India's talent pipeline, not an isolated success story.
The credit for this consistent performance goes largely to the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, a National Centre operating under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The centre oversees everything from initial student screening to advanced coaching camps ahead of international competitions. Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, congratulated the winners, calling their achievement a proud moment for India. The result strengthens India's growing standing in global science olympiads and is likely to encourage greater interest in physics education across schools in the coming years.
