World Intangible Investment Report 2026: India Leading Global Innovation

The World Intangible Investment Report 2026 was released on 8th July, 2026, jointly by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Luiss Business School. It confirms India's rise as a leading global innovation hub among the world's 15 largest economies. Driven by strong growth in software, R&D, intellectual property, and organisational capabilities. Union Minister Piyush Goyal credited India's startups, young entrepreneurs, and creators for this shift, along with sustained policy reforms and digital transformation.

What is the World Intangible Investment Report?

This annual global study tracks how major economies invest in "intangible" assets like software, research, patents, brand value, and organisational know-how as opposed to physical assets like machinery and buildings. The 2026 report ranks the world's 15 largest economies on this basis. 

World Intangible Investment Report 2026 Global Highlights

1. Intangible investment worldwide has outpaced tangible investment by more than three times since 2008, crossing USD 10 trillion in 2025.
2.  The US, Japan, and Germany top the list by absolute investment size, while Sweden, the US, and France lead on investment intensity relative to their economies.
3.  Organisational capital and R&D remain the two biggest categories globally.

World Intangible Investment Highlights 2026 India’s Key Findings

1. India logged the fastest intangible investment growth among the 15 largest economies, hitting USD 78.2 billion in 2023 at a 7.9% growth rate.
2. Software and databases made up 45% of this investment, the single largest component.
3. Organisational capital, R&D, design and brand value followed as major contributors.
4. India's brand investment grew at a CAGR of 7.2% between 2013 and 2023, placing it among the fastest-growing economies on this front.
