Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS) in Rajasthan is emerging as a critical sanctuary for tiger recovery and regional wildlife conservation. A landmark study by WWF-India and the Rajasthan Forest Department confirms the sanctuary's rich biodiversity and its growing capacity to sustain breeding tiger populations.
Officials released the findings in Jaipur through a report titled ‘Status and Conservation of Carnivores and Wild Ungulates in Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary’. The study provides a scientific foundation for future habitat management, wildlife corridor protection, and community-led conservation efforts.
Researchers conducted the field study between November 2023 and February 2024. They deployed 186 camera-trap stations across the sanctuary landscape to map mammal distribution, prey density, and habitat usage patterns.
The survey recorded 27 mammalian species, showcasing a healthy and functional ecosystem across the sanctuary:
The study's most significant discovery confirms successful tiger breeding inside Kailadevi for the first time in nearly thirty years. Over the past five years, the sanctuary supported three adult tigers and eight healthy cubs.
Arijit Banerjee, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force), noted that the sanctuary offers immense potential for tiger recovery beyond traditional protected zones.
K.C.A. Arun Prasad, Chief Wildlife Warden of Rajasthan, emphasized that securing forest corridors will establish Kailadevi as a secondary breeding stronghold alongside Ranthambore National Park.
The report provides the first scientific baseline for leopard numbers within the sanctuary. Researchers identified 29 individual adult leopards, establishing a population density of 3.65 leopards per 100 square kilometers.
This baseline allows forest managers to track population trends, evaluate prey availability, and adjust anti-poaching measures effectively.
Kailadevi plays a vital role as an ecological bridge connecting major wildlife reserves across the Western India landscape.

Ranthambore Tiger Reserve |
Primary source population for dispersing sub-adult tigers. |

Dholpur-Karauli Tiger Reserve |
Adjacent expansion zone for long-distance carnivore movement. |

Kuno National Park |
Inter-state corridor link facilitating genetic exchange into Madhya Pradesh. |
Kamlesh K. Maurya, Landscape Coordinator at WWF-India, stressed that protecting these contiguous forest tracts reduces habitat fragmentation and improves the long-term survival prospects of isolated carnivore groups.
Sustainable wildlife conservation requires active support from local villagers. WWF-India and the Rajasthan Forest Department have implemented community-centered programs across 46 fringe villages near Ranthambore and Kailadevi, directly benefiting nearly 8,000 residents.
The study establishes a scientific blueprint for future wildlife management in Rajasthan. Priority actions will focus on monitoring tiger breeding cycles, protecting forest corridors, preventing habitat degradation, and expanding community welfare programs.
With sustained habitat protection and science-based management, Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary stands ready to play a decisive role in restoring India's wild tiger populations.
