Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the Khet Bachao Abhiyan – Rabi 2026 in Karnal, Haryana. The nationwide campaign runs from October 22 to November 30, 2026.
The Ministry of Agriculture designed this campaign to accelerate sustainable farming practices during the Rabi cropping season. The initiative aims to improve soil health, promote efficient water management, encourage balanced fertilizer usage, and strengthen long-term crop productivity.
The campaign delivers scientific farming techniques directly to rural communities through structured field demonstrations and technical workshops.
1. Soil Health Restoration and Testing
The campaign encourages farmers to analyze soil composition before applying nutrients. Soil testing helps growers apply exact amounts of required fertilizers, avoiding unnecessary expenditure. The campaign also promotes regenerative farming practices that rebuild organic soil matter.
2. Balanced Fertilizer Application and Bio-Inputs
Agricultural experts guide farmers on integrating bio-fertilizers, organic compounds, and green ammonia. This balanced approach reduces input costs while protecting local ecosystems from chemical over-saturation.
3. Crop Diversification Strategies
The Ministry promotes crop diversification via dedicated missions for oilseeds, pulses, and horticulture. Intercropping techniques help farmers reduce financial risks tied to single-crop dependencies.
4. Advanced Water Conservation
Water management forms a central component of the campaign. Technical teams demonstrate rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge techniques, and micro-irrigation systems to optimize farm water efficiency.
5. Natural and Climate-Resilient Agriculture
The campaign accelerates the adoption of natural farming and integrated agricultural systems. Practical field demonstrations show farmers how to maintain yields while adapting to volatile weather patterns.
6. Crop Residue and Integrated Pest Management
Field experts provide solutions for managing post-harvest paddy stubble to prevent crop burning. Additionally, integrated pest management modules teach sustainable pest control strategies that protect crops without destroying beneficial insects.
Khet Bachao Abhiyan leverages existing federal welfare programs to maximize financial security for rural households:
The central government coordinates with State Agriculture Departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes, and Agricultural Technology Management Agencies (ATMA) to execute the campaign.
