The Indian Navy hand over command of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154) during a formal ceremony in Manama, Bahrain, on October 14, 2026. This milestone event marks the successful conclusion of the Indian Navy’s maiden command of a task force under the 47-nation Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).
CTF 154 serves as the dedicated multinational training task force of the Combined Maritime Forces. It conducts specialized training and operational capacity-building programs to strengthen maritime interoperability across the 47 member nations in the CMF partnership.
India initially joined the CMF as an associate partner in 2022 and became a full member in 2023. On February 11, 2026, the Indian Navy assumed command of CTF 154 for the first time, marking a strategic advancement in India’s engagement with global maritime security initiatives.
During its tenure, the Indian Navy led a sustained program of multinational maritime instruction under the CMF’s Maritime Domain Enhancement Training framework. This initiative deepened professional cooperation and helped participating navies enhance their regional security capabilities.
Under Indian Navy leadership, CTF 154 executed several key operations and exercises, including:
In total, these specialized programs generated over 7,800 training hours, engaging naval personnel from 39 participating nations.
To deliver these programs, the Indian Navy utilized virtual, hybrid, and in-person instruction modules, drawing on technical expertise from CMF task forces, partner navies, regional maritime agencies, and specialized international security organizations.
Throughout its command tenure, the Indian Navy expanded CTF 154’s engagement with operational task forces and regional maritime institutions. These interactions built a durable foundation for future multinational training and long-term capacity building.
Furthermore, the task force facilitated seamless exchanges of technical knowledge and tactical experience among member navies. Such collaborative efforts strengthen tactical coordination, preparing partner nations to address shared maritime security challenges effectively.
The Indian Navy's successful command reinforces India's role as a proactive security partner committed to stability across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and beyond.
The October 14 handover in Bahrain concludes a historic assignment for Indian naval diplomacy. Completing this maiden CMF command highlights India's growing operational authority and establishes the Indian Navy as a preferred training and security partner in the region.
The practical experience and strategic insights gained during this term will support future joint operations with international naval partners, enhancing collective readiness and maritime domain awareness worldwide.
