The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, announced the schedule for the election to constitute a new legislative assembly in Maharashtra and in Jharkhand in New Delhi on 15 October 2024.
The election in Maharashtra will take place in a single phase on 20 November 2024, and in Jharkhand, it will be held in two phases: 13 and 20 November 2024.
According to the Election Commission, the counting for both the state legislative assemblies will take place on 23 November 2024.
The present Maharashtra Legislative Assembly's term ends on 26 November 2024, and the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly's term ends on 5 January 2025.
The Chief Election Commissioner also announced by-polls for the Wayanad and Nanded Lok Sabha seats and 48 assembly constituencies across 15 states.
The by-poll for Wayanad Lok Sabha and 47 assembly constituencies will be held on 13 November, and the by-poll for Nanded and one assembly seat in Kedarnath will be held on 20 November.
The Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency became vacant after Rahul Gandhi opted to retain the Rae Barelli seat, while the Nanded Seat became vacant after the sitting MP Vasant Chavan died recently.
Counting for all the Lok Sabha and the assembly constituencies where the by-polls are being held will be done on 23 November 2024.
Election to constitute 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly
The present 14th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly was constituted on 26 November 2019.
Like all legislative assemblies in India, the term of the Maharashtra legislative assembly is five years.
The Maharashtra legislature is bicameral, with the upper house legislative council (78 members) and the lower house is the legislative assembly. The Maharashtra legislative assembly has 288 members.
In the 2019 legislative assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest party with 105 members.
Currently, Maharashtra is ruled by a coalition of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena(Shinde) and Nationalist Congress Party of Ajit Pawar factions. The coalition is known as Mahayuti, and Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) is the Chief Minister.
The Mahayuti has 156 members in the legislative assembly.
The present 5th Jharkhand Legislative Assembly was constituted on 5 January 2020. The Jharkhand legislature is unicameral, with a legislative assembly having 81 members.
In the 2019 legislative assembly election, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha emerged as the largest party with 30 members.
Currently, the INDIA alliance of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Congress Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Lennist ) is in power in the state.
Hemant Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is the Chief Minister of the State.
