The Australian cricket team led by Pat Cummins defeated India to lift its 6th ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup title. The final match was played on 19 November 2023 at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat; Australia defeated India by 6 wickets and won the Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023. The Australian team has appeared in 8 finals of the Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup and has won it six times: 1987,1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023. 

  • The last time the two teams met in the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2003 was at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa. Australia had beaten the Indian team led by Saurav Ganguly to win the World Cup 2003.

Brief Scorecard of the Final Match 

  • The Australian captain, Pat Cummins, won the toss and elected to field. Batting first, the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma was all out at 240 runs in their allotted 50 overs. This was the first time in this World Cup that the Indian team was all out in a match.
  • The Australian Team scored 241 runs at the loss of 4 wickets in 43 overs.
  • Travis Head of Australia scored 137 runs in the final and was named the man of the match.
  • Earlier, In the first semi-final played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 15 November 2023, India defeated New Zealand by 70 runs.
  • In the second Semifinal played at the Eden Garden stadium in Kolkata on 17 November 2023, Australia defeated South Africa by 2 wickets. 

History of Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup

  • The first four Men’s Cricket ODI World Cups were not called the ICC World Cup. The first, second and third ODI World Cups played in England in 1975,1979 and 1983, respectively, were called Prudential Cup. 
  • The fourth World Cup co-hosted by India and Pakistan in 1987 was called the Reliance Cup.  The cup was named after the sponsors.
  • The fifth World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand jointly was called the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup.

13th ICC Men’s ODI World CUP 

  • The 13th ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup was held in India from October 5 to 19 November 2023.
  •  A total of 48 matches were played across the country at 10 venues.
  • The matches were played in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
  • The semi-finals were played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai and Eden Garden Stadium, Kolkata.

Participating teams 

  • A total of 10 teams participated in the 13th ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The top 8 ranked ODI teams, India, Australia, Pakistan, England, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan qualified automatically. Sri Lanka and Netherlands made up the number by being the top two ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 teams.
  • An ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023  tournament was held in Zimbabwe to fill the last two spots in June-July 2023.
  • The qualifier tournament was won by Sri Lanka, defeating the Netherlands in the finals. 
  • Both Sri Lanka and the Netherlands have qualified for the ICC World Cup. For the first time, the then champion West Indian team did  not play in the ODI World Cup 2023. They failed to qualify at the Qualifier tournament.
