India’s first private helicopter assembly line inaugurated in Karnataka

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and President of France Shri Emmanuel Macron virtually inaugurated the Tata Advanced Systems final assembly line of the Airbus H-125 light utility helicopter at Vemagal in Karnataka from Mumbai on 17 February, 2026.

• This is India’s first private-sector helicopter final assembly line (FAL). The first ‘Made in India’ H-125 is expected to be delivered in early 2027 and will also be available for export in the South Asian region.
• This facility will manufacture 500 H-125 light helicopters over the next 20 years. After France, the United States and Brazil, Karnataka has now become home to the world’s fourth H-125 helicopter manufacturing and final assembly line (FAL) facility.
• The H-125 initiative of TASL and Airbus Helicopters follows their earlier collaboration to manufacture the C-295 transport aircraft in India.
• Emphasizing that Make-in-India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat have been the cornerstone of India’s economic policy since 2014.

Features of H-125 helicopter

• The H-125 program is expected to involve an investment of more than ₹1,000 crore.
• H-125 is the only helicopter in history to have landed on the summit of Mount Everest, giving it a performance ceiling superior to the existing light utility fleet.
• For the Indian Army, which operates in some of the world’s most challenging high-altitude and hot environments, this performance can make a crucial difference.
• The H-125M has been optimized to act as a high-altitude force multiplier in several critical missions. This versatile platform is designed to enhance tactical reconnaissance and surveillance by leveraging its low acoustic and thermal signature.
• Additionally, the H-125M provides a key advantage in high-altitude logistics, ensuring delivery of essential supplies to remote frontline outposts, and serves as a rapid response asset for search and rescue or medical evacuation operations.
• After the C295 military transport final assembly line, this is the second major industrial collaboration between Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus, which will strengthen a large military aerospace ecosystem in India.
