Cabinet Approves Mission Mausam to Strengthen Weather Forecasting

In a meeting held on 11 September 2024 and chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet approved Mission Mausam. The Mission Mausum will strengthen India’s research and development capability in weather and climate-related science.

Implementing Ministry of the Mission Mausam 

• The Union Ministry of Earth Science will implement the Mission Mausam scheme.
• Three institutes under the Ministry—the India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, Noida—will be the prime institutions to implement Mission Mausam.
• The other research and development institutes under the ministry -the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research, and the National Institute of Ocean Technology will play a supporting role.
• Important national and international Institutes, Academia, and Industries will also be associated with the Mission Mausam to further India's leadership in weather and climate sciences and services.

Duration and  Outlay of the Mission Mausam 

The duration of the Mission Mausam is two years, and the government of India has approved an outlay of Rs 2000 crore.

Aim of the Mission Mausam

• To boost research and development in atmospheric science, especially weather surveillance, modelling, forecasting, and management;
• Use of Artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to predict weather-related phenomena like monsoon forecasts, alerts for air quality, extreme weather events, cyclones etc, with high accuracy.
• Provide real-time data related to weather and climate-related phenomena to end users such as the government, industry, etc.

• It will boost capacity development in weather forecasting. 
• It will help the government and other stakeholders better prepare for extreme weather events.
• It will benefit various sectors, such as agriculture, disaster management, defence, environment, aviation, shipping, transport, energy, water resources, power, tourism,and health. 
• It will immensely benefit data-driven decision-making in areas such as urban planning, road and rail transport, offshore operations, and environmental monitoring.
