Iron Oxide Crystals Found in Lunar Soil by China’s Chang’e-6

• Chinese researchers have achieved a major scientific breakthrough by identifying small crystals of iron oxide, commonly known as hematite and maghemite, in lunar soil for the first time.
• This discovery comes from samples collected by China’s Chang’e-6 mission, and it challenges long-standing assumptions about the chemical environment on the Moon’s surface.
• China’s space agency, Shandong University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have reported the discovery of micrometer-sized iron oxide crystals in the Moon’s soil, which exist in the form of hematite and maghemite.
• These tiny particles were found in samples from one of the Moon’s oldest and largest impact regions, the South Pole–Aitken (SPA) Basin.
• According to research published in Science Advances, this discovery is direct evidence that iron oxide exists on the Moon’s surface. It disproves the assumption that the Moon’s atmosphere is so reducing that such oxidizing minerals cannot form there. Scientists believe this discovery will play an important role in future lunar missions and in understanding the Moon’s evolution.

China’s Chang'e-6

• The Chang’e-6 mission was a historic Chinese mission that made history by returning samples from the far side of the Moon. The mission is part of China’s lunar exploration program, and its main objective is to collect about 2 kilograms of material from the Moon’s far side and bring it back to Earth.
• After its launch on May 3, 2024, the mission successfully returned its samples to Earth on June 25, 2024. This mission is the sixth mission of the Chang’e lunar exploration program, which is named after a Chinese moon goddess.
• It is the second sample-return mission, after Chang’e 5, which did so in 2020 from the near side. China aims to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030, and this mission is an important step toward that goal.
• The landing site of the spacecraft was the South Pole–Aitken Basin, a crater formed 4 billion years ago, which is 13 kilometers deep and has a diameter of 2,500 kilometers.

Major lunar landing missions

• The most prominent is the Apollo program (USA), which was the first program to land humans on the Moon. Apollo 11: the first manned mission to land humans on the Moon in July 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the lunar surface.
• The Soviet Union’s Luna program, which achieved the first soft landing and sample return. Luna 9: the first soft landing on the Moon in 1966, followed by other successful soft landings such as Luna 13, 16, 17, and 20. Lunokhod 1: the first robotic rover to land on the Moon in 1970.
• Recent missions such as China’s Chang’e series, which includes the first landing on the far side of the Moon. Chang’e 3: landed in 2013 and deployed the Yutu rover, which was China’s first successful soft landing.
• Chang’e 4: the first soft landing on the far side of the Moon in January 2019, with the Yutu-2 rover. Chang’e 5: successfully returned samples.
• Other significant modern missions include India’s Chandrayaan-3 (first near the lunar south pole), Japan’s SLIM (high-precision landing), and upcoming missions from various countries.
• Israel: Beresheet (2019) was the first privately funded mission to attempt a landing on the Moon, but it crashed.
• South Korea: Danuri (2022) was South Korea’s first lunar mission, which is operating as an orbiter.
