C-DOT Wins IEEE Standards Association Corporate Award 2025

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has become the country’s institution to win the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA) Corporate Award 2025.

• The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has won the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA) Corporate Award 2025.
• Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has praised the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) for winning the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA) Corporate Award 2025.
• Shri Scindia said through a social media post that C-DOT has become India’s first organization and only the fifth organization globally to receive this honor from the 140-year-old IEEE.
• According to the minister, this award recognizes C-DOT’s contribution to advancing IEEE standards in wireless broadband, rural 5G, telecom education, and building a globally recognized, standards-based innovation ecosystem from India.

IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA)

• It evolved from the standards work of its predecessor organizations, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE, established 1884) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE, established 1912), which merged in 1963 to form IEEE.
• From the standards efforts of these two, the IEEE Standards Committee was formed in 1963, which became the Standards Board in 1973, and in 1976 became a separate entity with its own board seat.
• It developed foundational technologies such as the 802.11 (Wi-Fi) and Bluetooth standards, impacting consumer electronics and networking.
• It launched programs such as Industry Connections (IC) to promote new ideas and technologies before formal standardization.
• It expanded into areas such as cybersecurity, blockchain, energy, and healthcare, and supported new technologies through robust, open processes.
• The address of the IEEE Standards Department is at the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway, New Jersey, USA, while the official corporate headquarters of the parent IEEE is in New York City.

C-DOT (Centre for Development of Telematics)

• It was established in 1984 by the Government of India under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as an R&D hub to indigenize telecom technology, leading the “Indigenous Telecom Revolution.”
• It developed India’s first indigenous digital telephone exchange, C-DOT 128 RAX, which connected rural India.
• Developed Main Automatic Exchange (MAX) and MAX-XL for growing needs.
• Pioneered technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), securing its first US patent.
• A major contributor to the national BharatNet project (optical fiber network).
• Developed indigenous 4G and 5G technologies.
• Focus on cutting-edge areas: cybersecurity, quantum secure communication, IoT/M2M, AI, and smart cities.
