Chennai's Vaishali Rameshbabu has become India's 84th Grandmaster after crossing the coveted 2500 Elo rating during the 2023 IV Elllobregate Open in Barcelona, Spain.

  • Vaishali has become the third woman Grandmaster of India after Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli.
  • Vaishali achieved this feat by defeating Turkish FM Tamer Tarik Celebes (2238 rating).
  • Vaishali is the sister of FIDE World Cup runner-up R Praggnanandhaa and has become the first Indian brother-sister pair to achieve Grandmaster status in chess.
  • Vaishali had three GM criteria – Xtracon Open 2019, Fischer Memorial 2022 and Qatar Open 2023. Vaishali needed a 4.5 rating to reach her first Grandmaster title at the IV Elllobregat Open.
  • She is currently ranked world number 11 in the women's rankings and number two in India with a live rating of 2501.5.
