NITI Aayog and Digital India BHASHINI Division Sign Statement of Intent to Strengthen Multilingual AI

The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) and NITI Aayog have signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to work together on multilingual, voice-first AI solutions aimed at making governance more inclusive on 12th August, 2026. The agreement was signed by Amitabh Nag, CEO of DIBD, and Shoyabahmed Kalal, Director at NITI Aayog, and falls under the BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan initiative.
The core idea behind this partnership is simple: help citizens access government information and services in their own preferred Indian language. By integrating BHASHINI's language AI tools into NITI Aayog's digital platforms, the collaboration aims to strengthen two-way communication between the government and the public, while making public service delivery more accessible across the country's linguistic diversity.
The partnership will work across several BHASHINI tools and NITI Aayog's own data platform:
Enables multilingual access to NITI Aayog's services through BHASHINI's translation APIs and reference applications.
Supports building and improving translation models used across NITI Aayog's platforms.
Helps integrate language technologies into digital platforms, document systems, and communication workflows, including sector-specific voice bots.
Uses BhashaDaan to collect and curate linguistic data, with officials and citizens encouraged to contribute text, audio, and video samples.
Focuses on spreading awareness of BHASHINI's tools across districts, backed by training and technical support for users with varying digital literacy.
A data-driven platform that has already run over 200 capacity-building sessions and trained more than 4,000 officials, using dashboards and visualisations to support evidence-based governance at the district and block level.
An important part of this collaboration is SMRITI (System for Meeting Recording, Information & Transcription Interface). Built with BHASHINI, it automates meeting minutes and enables multilingual translation, improving operational efficiency while making governance more inclusive at the grassroots level.
DIBD, under the Digital India Corporation and MeitY, is India's national platform for AI-powered multilingual digital inclusion. It currently powers over 800 government websites, has enabled more than 9 billion cumulative AI inferences, processes over 24 million inferences daily, and supports 36 Indian text languages, 23 Indian voice languages, and 35 international languages.
