Jharkhand's Traditional Folk Instrument Mandar Gets GI Tag

The Geographical Indications Registry, Chennai, has granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Mandar, a traditional musical instrument of Jharkhand. A GI tag is given to products linked to a particular place and known for qualities that come from that place. The tag recognises the unique geographical, cultural, and traditional identity of Mandar.

Mandar is a percussion instrument closely connected with the tribal culture of Jharkhand. It is played during folk performances, community gatherings and celebrations.

The making of the Mandar relies on traditional craftsmanship and indigenous techniques. Locally sourced red soil is the key material. Unlike the dhol or dholak, one side of the Mandar is made entirely from soil, which gives the instrument its special design and sound.
