Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the country’s first 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotive plant of the Indian Railways at Dahod in Gujarat to the nation on 26 May 2025. This day also marks 11 years of Narendra Modi's tenure as the Prime Minister of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister on 26 May 2014.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to Gujarat on 26 &27th May 2025. During his visit to Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Dahod, Bhuj, and Gandhinagar to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of various projects worth Rs 82,950 crore.
India’s first 9000 HP Electric Locomotive Plant
The inaugurated Dahod electric locomotive plant is Indian Railways’ first 9000 HP manufacturing plant.
- The foundation stone of the Dahod locomotive manufacturing plant was laid in 2022.
- The plant has been built at a cost of Rs 21.405 crores
- The locomotives are being built by the Indian subsidiary of the German company Siemens in collaboration with the Indian railways.
- Siemens is responsible for the locomotives' design, engineering, and maintenance..
- Around 90% of the locomotive components have been made in India.
- The plant can produce 120 electric engines per year, and it can be increased to 150 per year.
- The locomotive will be used for freight trains and can transport up to 4600 tonnes of goods.
- The Indian Railways also plans to use the locomotive manufactured here for export purposes.
