Indian Railways has ramped up its production of locomotives and coaches to a record level in the fiscal year 2024-25. Indian Railways produced 1681 locomotives in 2024-25 and 7,134 coaches in 2024-25. According to the Railway Ministry, India has surpassed the combined production of the United States, Europe, South America, Africa, and Australia in locomotives in the 2024-25 period.
Record Locomotive Production in 2024-25
- Indian Railway produced 1681 locomotives in 2024-25, a growth of 19% as compared to 2023-24.
- In 2023-24, the total locomotive production was 1472.
- The majority of the locomotives produced were for freight or goods trains.
- During 2004 and 2014, the total production of locomotives was 4,695.
- From 2014 to 2024, locomotive production increased to 9,168 locomotives.
Locomotive Producing Units of Indian Railways
The Indian Railways has five locomotive manufacturing units.
Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW)
- Located - Chittaranjan, in the West Bardhaman district of West Bengal.
- Production started in 1950
- Production in 2024-25- 700 units
Banaras Locomotive Works
- Earlier called Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW)
- Located - Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
- Production started in 1961
- Mainly produces electric locomotives, and produces diesel locomotives on demand.
- Production in 2024-25- 477 units
Patiala Locomotive Works
- Located - Patiala, Punjab
- Established in 1981 for the production of spare parts for diesel locomotives.
- Since 2022, it has been a full-fledged locomotive-producing unit of Indian Railways.
- Manufactures electric locomotives
- Production - 304 units
Madhepura Electric Loco Factory
- It is a joint venture of the Indian Railways and the Alstom of France.
- Located - Madhepura district of Bihar
- Manufactures electric locomotives for goods trains
- Production in 2024-25- 100 units
Wabtec Locomotive Private Limited
- It is a joint venture of the Indian Railways and the Wabtec company of the United States.
- It has a diesel locomotive manufacturing plant in Marhowrah, Saran district of Bihar
- Established in 2018
- Production in 2024-25- 100 units
Passenger Coach production in 2024-25
In fiscal year 2024-25, the Indian Railways produced 7,134 coaches, an increase of 9% from the previous year’s production of 6,541 coaches.
The majority of coaches were non A/C coaches- 4,601 coaches
