A major celebration of Hindi language and cultural pride is underway in Mumbai, India's financial capital, as Union Home Minister Amit Shah leads the launch of Hindi Diwas 2026 alongside the Sixth All-India Official Language Conference in Mumbai on Monday, 14 September. This two-day event highlights Hindi's deep-rooted ties with Maharashtra's rich linguistic and literary legacy, in line with the vision set out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Serving as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of this two-day gathering, Amit Shah is joined by an impressive line-up of dignitaries, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. Several senior Members of Parliament, respected scholars, literary personalities, academicians, and top central government officials are also part of the Hindi Diwas celebrations.
A standout moment of the opening session is the felicitation ceremony, where Amit Shah confers the Rajbhasha Gaurav and Rajbhasha Kirti awards for 2025-26. These accolades, part of an ongoing tradition run by the Department of Official Language since 2021, recognise institutions, banks, businesses, and individuals nationwide for their meaningful work in furthering Hindi.
The two-day conference will also serve as a platform to unveil new literary and cultural works. Among them is a special commemorative edition of Rajbhasha Bharati, the department's flagship magazine, built entirely around the national song Vande Mataram. Alongside it, three literary works will be launched: 'Indian Knowledge System: Source and Form', 'Shiva is Eternal, Infinite', and 'From Darkness to Light' — the last being a unique collection of creative writings by inmates from various jails across the country.
The most heartfelt highlight of this year's Hindi Diwas 2026 conference is a dedicated session built around Vande Mataram. Adding deep historical resonance to the occasion is the presence of Joydeep Chattopadhyay, fifth-generation descendant of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, the song's original composer, whose appearance bridges the song's legacy from the freedom struggle to today.
Over the course of the two days, the event also examines the grassroots contribution of Town Official Language Implementation Committees, discussing their achievements in spreading Hindi at the local level. A large exhibition at the venue further showcases Hindi-promotion initiatives through stalls set up by various ministries, banks, and institutions.
