Minister of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel released the annual publication ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025’ of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in New Delhi on November 26, 2025.
- Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel released the annual publication ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2025’ of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi on the occasion of National Milk Day on November 26, 2025.
- Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2025 is an essential publication document that provides complete data on trends in the livestock and dairy sector. BAHS 2025 is based on the results of the integrated sample survey conducted for the period from March 1, 2024, to February 29, 2025.
- This survey, which is unique in the country, generates essential data on production estimates of major livestock products (MLPs) such as milk, eggs, meat and wool, which plays a crucial role in research and policy formulation in the livestock sector.
Milk Production:
- India ranks 1st globally in milk production. The total milk production in the country during 2024-25 is estimated to be 247.87 million tonnes.
- In 2023-24 it was 239.30 million tonnes, which is a 3.58% increase in 2024-25 compared to the previous year. Per-capita milk availability has increased from 319 gm/day in 2014-15 to 485 gm/day in 2024-25.
- The top 5 milk-producing states are: Uttar Pradesh (15.66%), Rajasthan (14.82%), Madhya Pradesh (9.12%), Gujarat (7.78%), Maharashtra (6.71%). Together, they contribute 54.09% of the country’s total milk production.
- Compared to the previous year, milk production from foreign/cross-bred cattle increased by 4.97% and milk production from indigenous/common cattle increased by 3.51%. Milk production from buffaloes also increased by 2.45% compared to the previous year.
Egg Production:
- India ranks second in the world in egg production. The total egg production in the country during 2024-25 is estimated to be 149.11 billion, and it has registered a growth of 4.44%. During 2023-24, annual production had increased by 3.18%.
- Per-capita availability of eggs has increased from 62 nos/year in 2014-15 to 106 nos/year in 2024-25.
- The largest contributor to total egg production is Andhra Pradesh, with a share of 18.37%, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.63%), Telangana (12.98%), West Bengal (10.72%) and Karnataka (6.67%). Altogether, these states contribute 64.37% of India’s total egg production, showing their significant role in the country’s poultry sector.
- Out of total eggs, commercial poultry contributed 125.98 billion eggs, which is 84.49% of total production. On the other hand, backyard poultry contributed 23.13 billion eggs, which is 15.51% of the total production.
Meat Production:
- India ranks 4th globally in meat production. The total meat production in the country during 2024-25 is estimated to be 10.50 million tonnes and it has registered a growth of 2.46%, while production had increased in 2023-24. Meat production from poultry is 5.18 million tonnes, which is nearly half of total meat production.
- The top five meat-producing states are West Bengal (12.46%), Uttar Pradesh (12.20%), Maharashtra (11.57%), Andhra Pradesh (10.84%) and Telangana (10.49%). Together, they contribute 57.55% of the country’s total meat production.
Wool Production:
- The total wool production in the country during 2024-25 is estimated to be 34.57 million kg, with a significant growth of 2.63% over the previous year.
- The largest contributor to total wool production is Rajasthan, with a share of 47.85%, followed by Jammu & Kashmir (22.88%), Gujarat (6.22%), Maharashtra (4.75%) and Himachal Pradesh (4.30%).
- These states together contribute 85.98% of the country’s total wool production, showing their major role in India’s wool industry.
