Indian Navy Launches Next-Generation Patrol Vessel 'Shruti' at GRSE Kolkata

The Indian Navy's second Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), named Shruti, was launched on August 11, 2026, at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) facility in Kolkata. The launch was performed by Manika Sadhu, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, who was also the chief guest. GRSE's chairman, Cmde P.R. Hari, announced that the company plans to deliver five warships to the Navy by the end of 2026-27, including the stealth frigate Vindhyagiri and four Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts.

About 'Shruti' (Yard 3037) Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel

1. Shruti is a 3,000-tonne warship built as part of an 11-ship NGOPV programme split between GRSE and Goa Shipyard Limited. 
2. It's the second of four NGOPVs being built by GRSE, following Sanghmitra's launch in 20th May 2026. 
3. Once operational, it will be tasked with broad maritime surveillance, anti-piracy and counter-terrorism operations, protecting offshore economic assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and search and rescue missions.

About NGOPVs (Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel)

1. NGOPVs are significantly bigger and more capable than the Navy's earlier offshore patrol vessels. 
2. Each ship measures about 113 metres long and 14.6 metres wide, with a displacement of roughly 3,000 tonnes. 
3. They can hit speeds of up to 23 knots and have an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots. 
4. With a shallow draught of just 4 metres, these vessels can operate close to the coast, making them useful for maritime interdiction, VBSS (visit, board, search and seizure) operations, mine warfare, presence-cum-surveillance missions, and even supporting special operations and anti-infiltration efforts.
