Singapore PM Lawrence Wong leads his party PAP to a landslide victory

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong led his People's Action Party (PAP) to a landslide victory in the recently held general election in the country. The victory of PAP in the general election has extended its 66 years of continuous rule of Singapore for another five years.

It was the first general election fought by PAP under Lawrence Wong leadership after he took the reign of Singapore in December 2024 when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who ruled the country for over 20 years, stepped down.

14th consecutive election victory for the PAP

The election to elect a new Singapore Parliament was held on May 3, 2025. The Singapore Parliament is unicameral and has 97 seats.

An election was held for 92 seats, as the ruling party won five seats unopposed.

The ruling PAP won 82 of the 92 seats that went to the election, bringing its total strength in the Parliament to 87.

The PAP secured 65.6 per cent of the votes cast, up from 61 per cent in the 2020 general election.

It was the 14th consecutive election victory for the PAP, which has ruled the country since 1959.

The opposition Workers' Party won 10 seats, the same as in the last election.

Dominance of the PAP in Singapore 

Singapore is a parliamentary democracy. Elections are held regularly in the country but the electoral and political framework in the country favours the ruling party at the expense of the opposition party.

Elections in the country are normally free from fraud and other election-related irregularities, but they are unfair due to the advantages enjoyed by the incumbent party. The Singapore government tightly controls the media, and it is generally pro-government; its electoral system is in favour of the ruling party, and put high financial barriers to contesting elections. 

Compulsory Voting in Singapore  

In Singapore, citizens aged 21 and above are eligible to vote. Voting is compulsory in Singapore, and citizens need to register with the Registers of Electors. 

If a voter doesn't vote in a general election, his or her name is removed from the electoral list, and he or she is ineligible to vote in the next general election.
