E -Rickshaw driver Arti of UP conferred UK’s Women's Empowerment Award

An 18-year-old woman E-rickshaw driver from the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, Arti, has been conferred with the Amal Clooney Women's Empowerment Award by the King of the United Kingdom, Charles III. The award ceremony was held at Buckingham Palace, London, England. Arti arrived at Buckingham Palace in a Pink E-rickshaw, which she received under the Mission Shakti scheme of the Uttar Pradesh government.

Amal Clooney Women's Empowerment Award

The Amal Clooney Women's Empowerment Award is named after the famous English Barrister Amal Clooney. The award is sponsored by a British charity, Prince Trust International. The Prince Trust International was set up by King Charles when he was Prince of Wales. 

The Trust recognises and honours the work of young women who, despite all odds, succeed in their endeavours and make a lasting difference to the people around them.

Arti was honoured for inspiring other young girls in her locality through her work with the government's Pink E-rickshaw initiative.

Mission Shakti and Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme 

The Uttar Pradesh government launched Mission Shakti in 2020 to empower the women of the state through safety, security, and self-reliance. The scheme aims to provide a secure environment for women and provide training and access to livelihood schemes so that they can change their lives and become self-independent.

As part of Mission Shakti, the government has launched the Pink E-Rickshaw scheme. The state government has aligned the Pink E-Rickshaw initiative with the Mukhya Mantri Yuva Swarozgar Yojana. Under this initiative, eligible women between 18 and 40 years old and 10th pass are provided six days of training on safety, security, and self-defence related to women’s workplaces and another three days of training in entrepreneurship development.

Under this initiative, women are being trained to drive E-Rickshaws and are trained in traffic rules and regulations.

The scheme is run by the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Department of the government of Uttar Pradesh and implemented by UP Industrial Consultant Limited (UPICON).

The woman gets an E-Rickshaw at a low-interest rate loan with a subsidy of Rs 49,5000.
