16th India-Japan Annual Summit Starts in New Delhi

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on July 1, 2026, for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, accepting an invitation extended by PM Narendra Modi. The three-day visit marks Takaichi's first official trip to India and builds on Modi's Tokyo visit in August 2025 for the 15th edition of the summit, reinforcing both nations' commitment to their Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

India and Japan have shared this Special Strategic and Global Partnership since 2014, and the 16th annual summit is being seen as a push to take that relationship into its next decade.

1. PM Modi's Tokyo visit last year set the direction, centering security, investment, innovation, and people-to-people ties as the priorities going forward.
2. Takaichi is also attending the India-Japan Business Forum, with discussions expected around semiconductors, critical minerals, and resilient supply chains, all key pieces of the economic security conversation both sides are keen to advance.
3. Expected outcome documents include a Joint Statement from the summit, an energy resilience declaration, and several MoUs spanning AI, pharmaceuticals, batteries, and critical minerals. A declaration specifically on AI cooperation is also likely to come through.

India-Japan 16th Annual Summit Agenda

The agenda this time is fairly wide-ranging. 

1. On the energy side, a large-scale green ammonia project in Odisha is on the table, along with deeper biogas cooperation and regional resilience through POWERR Asia. 
2. Both nations are also aligned on promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, something Takaichi has championed, with India seen as a central partner in advancing that vision.
3. Beyond bilateral matters, both leaders are expected to exchange views on regional and global issues of shared concern.
